The Great Wildebeest Migration is one of the “Seven New Wonders of the World”. Nowhere in the world is there a movement of animals as immense as the wildebeest migration, over two million animals migrate from the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania to the greener pastures of the Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya from July through to October.

The migration has to cross the Mara River in the Maasai Mara where crocodiles will prey on them. This is one of the highlights as the animals try and cross the Mara River alive. In the Maasai Mara, they will be hunted, stalked, and run down by the larger carnivores.

The Maasai Mara also has one of the largest densities of lion in the world and is no wonder this is the home of the BBC wildlife channels Big Cat Diary.

In between game drives, visit the ‘Ekang’ - mostly referred to as Manyatta (Masai Village) - and experience their tradition and culture. “The Masai are members of the Nilotic tribal group along with the Samburu.

The Masai are well-known colourful people who are mainly cattle and goat herders. They like to adorn themselves with colorful cloth and beads. Wealth is measured in cattle. The traditional villages surround a central area.

The young males go through a period of warriorhood before they marry. Men generally make tribal decisions and care for the cattle. The women build the houses and take care of the home. More and more villages are becoming less traditional. This can be seen by metal roofs instead of thatching, all wooden houses, and even farm plots. Growing food is frowned upon by traditional Masai.

There are even some homes with satellite dishes. In villages near lodges, income is supplemented by posing for photos, selling used spears, or performing traditional dances.”
